William J. Riley founded the New Balance Arch Support Company in the Boston area, manufacturing arch supports and other accessories designed to improve shoe fit. His first product, a flexible arch support, was designed with three support points to provide greater balance and comfort in the shoe. It is believed that Riley came up with the name "New Balance" by observing chickens in his yard and demonstrated the way his arch supports worked by keeping a chicken foot on his office desk.

Amelia Claire Windsor is a young librarian with several potential love interests. One is Phil West Louis Calhern, a wealthy young man and a student of Amelia’s father, Andrew Philip Hubbard. However, Phil's affluence keeps Amelia at bay. When Amelia becomes malnourished because her family cannot afford food, her mother Margaret McWade has no choice but to turn to thievery. Seeing that his professor and his love interest are in a dire situation, Phil comes up with a solution. In silent films as a young man but best remembered for his elderly roles of the 1950s, notably as the lead in Julius Caesar and as Oliver Wendell Holmes in John Sturges's The Magnificent Yankee. Design
Calhern is a grotesk sans family made up of 3 sub-families. Bringing a vast variety of character, the typeface was first influenced by type found in film credits and title sequences. When studying type styles through research, a key factor of having a versatile style set was made especially clear. It was fundamental to aim for a typeface that could speak in many different voices.
